UIL APPROVES CHANGES TO PLAYOFF FORMATS FOR MULTIPLE SPORTS

The UIL Legislative Council approved an amendment that would change the format for the post season in several sports.

Baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, and basketball are now going to be following a similar pattern that has been adopted by football in the playoffs.

Four teams from each district will still go to the playoffs. The two teams with the highest enrollments go into the Division I playoffs. The two teams with the lowest enrollments go into the Division II playoffs.

Just like with football, instead of there being six state champions, there will now be 12 state champions.

For the Brenham Cubs and Burton Panthers, if they make the playoffs, they will be in Division II. This is due to both having among the lowest enrollments in their respective districts.

Brenham’s district for volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, and softball consists of Bryan Rudder, College Station, A&M Consolidated, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Lake Creek.

Meanwhile, Burton has a different district for each sport.

The changes will also eliminate the Region Quarterfinal round of the playoffs.

In addition to that, it will separate the Region Semifinals and Finals, and the State Semifinals and Finals, to where they will no longer be played on back-to-back days.

The new changes take effect August 1.
