CITY OF BRENHAM TO CONDUCT WATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE IN AUGUST

The City of Brenham’s water system will soon begin its annual temporary conversion of the disinfectant used in the distribution system.

From August 1-30, the city will switch from using chloramine to free chlorine.  The conversion allows the city to conduct routine maintenance, sustain clean water and limit the potential for harmful bacteria in the water system.  The city says there are no indications of contamination, but this maintenance period will be used to prevent the formation from nitrifying bacteria and biofilm.

The city says the water will remain safe to drink and use throughout the process, but residents may notice some discoloration or cloudiness and possibly a chlorine odor or taste.  If this happens, they are advised to run water through the tap until it clears.

The public may also see open fire hydrants throughout the city.  This is to flush the system to help remove sediment from the pipes and distribute the change in disinfectant.  Minor pressure fluctuations and small air pockets may also occur.

At the end of the conversion, the city will reintroduce the standard disinfection method, and the system will return to normal operating conditions.

Any water customers who use tap water for kidney dialysis at home should contact their doctor to see if any changes are necessary in their procedures.  Those who use the water for aquariums should monitor chlorine residuals.

Anyone with questions can contact City of Brenham Water Systems Superintendent Jerry Saldivar at 979-337-7434 or jsaldivar@cityofbrenham.org.

  1. I have very little water pressure.
we don’t drink the water ever with our extra filtering.
Our dogs don’t even drink it. I keep hearing they are working on the water system
It’s been 3-1/2 yrs since we moved here and it hasn’t changed.
Yellow brown water quite often. We need to get these issues fixed before you add any more houses to the system

    1. Just dump in the disinfectant annually to make the state, TNRCC, happy and get your paycheck. Nothing else matters when your water doesn’t come from the city. City had the same problem in the early 90’s.
