BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL HOLDS PUBLIC HEARING FOR AMENDMENTS TO COMPREHENSIVE PLAN, FUTURE LAND USE MAP, THOROUGHFARE PLAN

City Planner Shauna Laauwe presents

amendments to the city's
comprehensive plan, future land use
map and thoroughfare plan.

Little discussion was had by the Brenham City Council today (Thursday) during a public hearing covering amendments to the city’s comprehensive plan, future land use map and thoroughfare plan.

The amendments, which were recommended for approval last month by the Brenham Planning and Zoning Commission, establish the framework for the adoption of the Brenham Family Park Special Area Plan and the extension of South Blue Bell Road to Highway 36 South.

The Special Area Plan sets out what the desired uses are for the over 600 acres of land that surrounds the proposed Brenham Family Park, which include single- and multi-family residential, commercial, and open space.  City Planner Shauna Laauwe said it is only a concept plan and not concrete, but it gives prospective developers an idea and a vision for how the area around the passive park could best be utilized.

For the extension of South Blue Bell Road, Laauwe said it was initially set to go from the Brenham Business Park to Salem Road, but members of the project working group were concerned that it was too parallel to Highway 290 and could end up being a “cut-through” while not winding through the development area.  Now, the extension is proposed to have more curvature to keep speeds slower, go through the development area, and reach FM 109.  A collector would be added at Salem Road to connect it to the extension.

The public hearing was only for informational purposes and to offer the chance for comment, though no one from the public spoke on the matter.  The item will come back in September for ordinance consideration.

After that, another public hearing was held regarding the proposed annexation of approximately 6.5 acres of land on Dixie Road and Old Masonic Road.  As with the first public hearing, there no public comments.

The city is looking to annex Dixie Road from Highway 36 North to the existing city limit line, due to the ongoing development of the Vintage Farms subdivision.  The area to the west of Old Masonic Road was annexed in 1984 and is the Scenic Estates subdivision; the annexation would move the city limit line from the back of residential properties.

City Secretary Jeana Bellinger described both as “clean-up annexations”, and as of today she had not heard any questions from citizens.

The second public hearing on the topic will be held during a called meeting next Thursday, August 22nd at 1 p.m.  After that, the city will perform readings of an annexation ordinance on September 19th and October 3rd.
