Students at Burton ISD had some special guest greeters when they arrived at school on Monday morning.

To kickoff “Start With Hello” Week, Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak and members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office greeted the students as they arrived for class.

“Start With Hello” Week is a national call-to-action week dedicated to making new social connections and creating a sense of belonging among local youth.

The program teaches youth how to minimize social isolation, empathize with others, and create a more inclusive and connected school community.

It includes three steps:

1.) Learn how to recognize the signs of loneliness and social isolation.
2.) Find out what you can do to help others feel included.
3.) Discover how to break the ice and strike up a conversation.

There are programs designed for kindergarten through fifth grade, and sixth grade through 12th grade.
Burton ISD Superintendent Vikki Curry sent out a special thank you to Sheriff Hanak and his staff for participating.

  1. Real leadership from a real Sheriff. We are sincerely going to be missing this next year. Sheriff Hanak thank you and your Deputies for all you do. Nice to put a smile on a kids face headed to school good job to the school staff in Burton also. Now that is a cause for applause.
