CUBS OPEN THE SEASON WITH 39-35 WIN OVER HUNTSVILLE

The Brenham Cub Football Team opened the season with a thrilling come-from-behind 39-35 win over the Huntsville Hornets on Friday night. The Cubs avenged a loss they suffered on that same field a year ago.

Brenham got off to a good start in the first quarter. On their opening drive, Jordan Harvey found Cartelle Brown on a 41 yard touchdown pass at 9:28. After Huntsville got penalized on the extra point try, the Cubs decided to go for it, and Jakoby Dixon ran it in for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0.

Brenham got the ball back after Defensive End Mason Seeber intercepted a pass, and returned it to the Hornet three-yard line. Dixon, then, ran in the touchdown at the 8:00 mark, and Bleu Cienega kicked the extra point to give the Cubs a 15-0 lead.

Huntsville got on the scoreboard with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. QB Austin Taylor ran one in from 5-yards out and later found Savion Conteh on a touchdown pass. The Hornets went for a two-point conversion to try to tie it, but the pass failed, so Brenham took a 15-13 lead into the locker room at half time.

In the third quarter, on their opening drive, Bleu Cienega kicked a 30-yard field goal to extend the Cubs lead to 18-13.

Huntsville RB Trae'Shawn Brown scored on a pair of touchdown runs. The Hornets scored a two point conversion on a Taylor pass to Zay Adolphe, and extra point by Caleb Culak, to put them in front 28-18 going into the fourth quarter.

Brenham battled back as Dixon scored on a 41-yard touchdown run to cut it to 28-24. The extra point was no good.

The Hornets extended their lead on a touchdown run by Adolphe, and an extra point by Culak to make the score 35-24 Huntsville.

The Cubs were not done yet though. Xyran Upshaw scored on a two-yard run, and then caught a pass from Jordan Harvey for the two-point conversion to trim the Hornet lead down to three points, 35-32.

Brenham later got the ball back. On a fourth down play, Dixon lined up in the Wildcat, and looked like he got stuffed at the line of scrimmage, but pulled off an escape that would make the late Harry Houdini proud, and ran the ball down to the Hornet six yard line. Upshaw would score from six yards out and Cienega added the extra point to give put the Cubs back in front 39-35 with 2:32 left in the game.

Huntsville's last drive would end on an interception by Jabreon Moore to seal the victory for the Brenham Cubs.

Next up, Brenham will be back home on Friday night to host Houston Sterling at Cub Stadium at 7pm. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm.
