CUBS DOMINATE STERLING IN ROUTE TO A 42-6 SENIOR NIGHT WIN
The Brenham Cub Football Team dominated the Houston Sterling Raiders 42-6 to go to 2-0 on the season earlier tonight (Friday).
Mason Seeber got things started by blocking a punt by the Raiders, which gave the Cubs the ball. Jakoby Dixon then scored the first of his four touchdowns in the game on a 20-yard run. Bleu Cienega added the extra point to make it 7-0 Brenham with 8:37 left to go in the first quarter.
The Cubs got the ball back, and Jordan Harvey quickly found Dixon on a 40-yard touchdown pass, and another kick by Cienega made it 14-0 with 7:13 left in the first.
In the second quarter, Dixon added two more rushing touchdowns to his total for the night. He scored on a three-yard run with at the 7:30 mark. Brenham recovered a fumble, and then Dixon ran one in from 18 yards out to make it 28-0 just 11 seconds later with 7:19 left in the half.
Sterling RB Jason Hatton would score a touchdown at 3:36 left in the second quarter to cut the lead to 28-6, which would be as close as they would come.
The Cubs started the third quarter with Xyran Upshaw scoring on a 39-yard touchdown run and Cienega added the PAT to make it 35-6 at the 9:04 mark.
Brenham scored one final time on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Harvey to Chris Guidry with 58 seconds in the third quarter. Cienega added the kick to finish off the scoring at 42-6.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. With the lopsided score, Coach Danny Youngs was able to work in several of his bench players in order to give them some in-game experience.
Next week, the Cubs will go on the road to take on the Bryan Vikings at Merrill Greene Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm (7pm pregame on KWHI 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com).

Jakoby Dixon 17 carries, 147 yards, 3 touchdowns
Xyran Upshaw 1 carry, 39 yards, 1 touchdown
PASSING

RECEIVING

Jakoby Dixon 2 catches, 53 yards, 1 touchdown

Great win last night but can we please open up the offensive playbook more! This team is loaded with speed! If they wanna make a deep playoff it can’t be done around one player
My opinion Brenham band needs to move on from the current director, or either add more to his catalog of music that is up to date. Our band simply got out played once again by a much smaller band last night which by the way showed up right at halftime, had no time to warm up and still delivered a great performance! Our fans deserve to be more involved in the game with the help of the band and as a long time cub fan we are tired of hearing the same songs over and over during the game. Thinking back over the years during the playoffs PNG band over played our band during the course of both games and it caused a somewhat effect on the game.
There is no 1 catalog of music that everyone will be happy with. No offense to Sterling’s band, they were very entertaining, but we don’t agree that our band was outplayed. We love what the Cub Band does and don’t want to change anything.
All 3 of our children have been in the Cub Band, and we fully support the band directors. They provide a fun environment for students. Not only do they teach music and marching, but they instill leadership, accountability, and responsibility.

Are you seriously calling out the Brenham Cub Band director? Do you know anything about the Cub Band?
Do you know how much they pour into these kids? Do you know how highly regarded they are in their field?
You can’t be serious….smh
Hey cub fan – please help us out. What exactly do you think the band needs to play? Are you saying you would prefer a halftime performance similar to what Sterling provided? Would you be willing to purchase those new charts on a yearly basis?
You’re right. Our fans deserve to be more involved in the game. It starts with standing for the fight song and sticking around for the Alma Mater.
I’d love to hear how you feel their band outplayed our band other than “they were louder”. The sterling band does what they do well and I found it very entertaining but what we do is also pretty great.
Pretty sure most in the Golden Triangle hate hearing Cherokee after every down. Don’t “PNG” our Brenham.
As a senior of the high school band, I would like to personally thank you so much for your engagement in our performance, we sincerely appreciate it. That being said, it is evident that you have no sense of anything musical or what makes a marching show score good in our competitions. While we would like to pander to your preferences, we need to do what is best for our program as a whole. We have a totally different style of marching than Houston Sterling does; both are great, but not really comparable, and thus will have different shows. Our directors are some of the best in the businesses, and saying that they are anything less shows how oblivious you are in knowledge of marching bands.Thank you again for your support of our kids, who devote numerous hours into making the show the best it can be for you 🙂
Here’s the thing about entertainment value – it’s completely subjective. While you were more entertained by Sterling’s band – no doubt they gave an incredible performance – there are others who were more entertained by the Cub Band. And there are probably many, like I was, who were entertained by both bands! Two groups of outstanding, hard-working students and directors who gave their all to put a show on the field Friday night.
I acknowledge this is the opinion section and you’re entitled to yours, and I feel compelled to reply to your call for our band director to “move on.” I don’t think you will find many, if any, who are involved with the Cub Band who will agree with you. A few facts about what our Directors do and who they are from a band parent (x2):
1. In marching season, the Cub Band starts in the summer with two-a-day practice. They come early, they stay late throughout the season – every day. During October, they will take part in multiple contests and marching festivals where they compete against schools MUCH larger than ours and consistently make the finals and receive accolades for their performances. Even when we play against other 5As, we are smaller with fewer resources and the Cub Band manages to make it mark.
2. Speaking of resources, many of the bands we compete against charge hefty fees for each child to participate in band. The Cub Band does not – the kids and parents work their tails off to fundraise so that every kid who is willing to put in the work can participate. To me, that means that the band leadership has committed to a more difficult road – take a band with a mix of kids from different backgrounds and abilities and resources and create something that is consistently recognized for its excellence. A high calling, in my opinion, and one they answer well with outstanding results.
3. The musicianship in this band is outstanding. Elite, even. During concert season, our bands from middle school to junior high to high school consistently receive the highest rankings possible and MANY of our musicians receive all-region and even all-state honors. This is in large part due to the emphasis our directors place on musicianship. In fact, every year they secure clinicians and private lesson teachers to come to the schools, and the Band Parents fundraise to ensure this is available to everyone.
The Cub Band has established and maintained a culture that leads to the things I mentioned above. It starts in 6th grade and builds every year through senior year. The Brenham band directors go to every length to bring kids in and shepherd them not only in their music but in discipline, leadership and personal growth. As a band parent, I am incredibly grateful for what my children have received through this program.
I’m sorry you weren’t as entertained by the Cub Band as you were by the opposing team’s school, but before you call for someone’s job based on the subjective entertainment value of an early-season band performance, I hope you’ll consider that there’s far more to the story. Having any one of our band directors “move on” as you suggest would be a great loss to the families who love this band program and its directors.
Well said!! The band directors are awesome and deserve credit for all of their hard work!! My child loved his time in the band and has memories that will last a lifetime! Go Cub Band!!
