NAVASOTA POLICE DETAINS STUDENT FOR SOCIAL MEDIA THREAT

The “See Something, Say Something” approach led to the Navasota Police Department apprehending a student for allegedly making a terroristic threat.

On Monday evening, Navasota Police were informed of a possible threat between two students that was circulated through social media.

Navasota ISD Superintendent Dr. Stu Musick released a statement this (Tuesday) afternoon saying that the threat was made by one student towards another outside of school, and did not involve or mention the school.

NPD School Resource Officers began investigating the threat and identified the suspect as a juvenile high school student. The student suspected of the threat was detained and charged with terroristic threat.

Musick also said in the statement that they wanted to assure the community that all the students are safe, and that no weapon was found during the investigation.

The Navasota Police Department and Navasota ISD take the safety of students and faculty seriously.

NPD said they are working with the Grimes County District Attorney and County Attorney Offices to criminally charge anyone making a threat towards a school, student, or faculty member.

Police have observed an increase in school-related threats recently, a trend that they say mirrors what is happening nationwide.

While they take each one seriously and thoroughly investigate, addressing those situations requires significant time and resources.

NPD and NISD ask that parents talk to their children about the gravity of making threats. Threats come in the form of social media apps, text messages, or even mail.

Also, if anyone sees or hears about a potential threat, please continue to report them to a school resource officer, the Navasota Police Department at 936-825-6410, or Grimes County Crime Stoppers at 936-873-2000.
