The Brenham Cub Football Team suffered its first loss of the season last (Friday) night at the hands of the defending Class 4A Division II State Champion Gilmer Buckeyes 51-37 at Huntsville ISD Stadium.

The Cubs got off to a good start as Jakoby Dixon scored on a 75-yard touchdown run. After Gilmer got a penalty on the extra point try, Brenham elected to go for the two point conversion. Dixon ran that in as well to give Brenham an 8-0 lead with 8:08 to go in the first quarter.

Gilmer scored their first touchdown on a 5-yard run by Zade Taylor, and then Trillyon Butler ran in the 2-point conversion to tie it 8-8 at the 5:02 mark.

After Brenham fumbled on their next drive, Gilmer scored again on 2-yard run by Cadon Tennison. Braydon Pate added the extra point to give the Buckeyes a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Dixon broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run, and then added another two point conversion to give Brenham a 16-15 lead with 8:28 to go.

Taylor scored on a five-yard run, and Pate would add the extra point to put Gilmer back in front 22-16 at the 4:16 mark.

On Brenham's next drive, Dixon would have his biggest run of the night, an 86-yard touchdown scamper. Bleu Cienega added the extra point to put Brenham back in front 23-22 with 3:19 left in the second quarter.

Gilmer would get one more quick score on a 73-yard run by Butler. They went for two, but it was no good. The Buckeyes would still take 28-23 lead into the locker room a half time.

Gilmer extended their lead to 31-23 with a 29-yard field goal by Pate with 6:28 left in the third.

The Buckeyes would then score on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Brady McCown to Taylor. Pate missed the extra point, but Gilmer extended their lead to 37-23 through three quarters.

The Cubs opened the scoring in the fourth quarter when Jabreon Moore returned a punt 42 yards for a touchdown. Cienega added the extra point to cut the lead to 37-30.

The Buckeyes would then put the game away on a 70-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Solomon Jackson and a 48-yard touchdown run from Butler. That put Gilmer ahead 51-30 with 2:38 left in the game.

Brenham would get one more touchdown on a pass from Jordan Harvey to Chris Guidry with 1:17 left. Cienega added the extra point to finish the scoring at 51-37.

The Cubs drop to 4-1 on the season. They will get a bye next week, and return to action on October 11 for the Homecoming game against Waco High School. That is also the district opener. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm, followed by the kickoff at 7pm.
