BURTON CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON SOLID WASTE CONTRACT, DISCUSS SUBDIVISION ORDINANCE

A new solid waste contract will be among the items considered by the Burton City Council on Tuesday.

The council has undertaken lengthy discussion on the city’s existing contract with Texas Commercial Waste (TCW).

Based on feedback received from residential and commercial customers, the city plans to renegotiate its contract with TCW for residential services, but allow commercial and industrial customers to procure their own trash collection services.  Mayor Karen Buck said at last month’s council meeting that this will involve creating ordinances and processes to where the city can collect franchise fees, similar to the City of Brenham’s method with roll-off dumpsters.

In a discussion-only item, councilmembers are set to talk about a possible subdivision ordinance.

The ordinance has also been a talking point of previous council meetings, with Buck saying in August that the goal is to create a safe and orderly way to develop the city further while protecting the available land and managing resources and infrastructure.  However, some residents have expressed concern that it could hinder their ability to sell property and stifle growth without a larger plan in place.

Also on the agenda, the council will:

  • Approve the 2023-24 Fiscal Year audit as presented by Medack & Oltmann, LLP.
  • Consider opening a new checking account to only be used for funds received through the Texas Department of Agriculture 2023-24 Community Development Block Grant program, having all elected officials as authorized signers on the account, giving the city secretary informational access regarding the account, and adding the account to online banking.
  • Hear updates regarding projects through the General Land Office, Community Development Block Grant program and Texas Water Development Board.
  • Approve a proclamation for Small Business Saturday on November 30th.

The council will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Burton City Hall.
