BURTON PANTHERS FINISH THIRD AT GIDDINGS POWERLIFTING MEET

The Burton Panther Powerlifting team started their season Saturday at the Buffalo Invitational hosted by Giddings High School. The Panthers took eight lifters and all eight placed and earned medals.
Team Captain Avery Applewhite (Sr.) started the scoring off for the Panthers with a 4th place finish in the girls 148 class, with a 545 lb combined total. Applewhite is the lone girl representing the Panthers this year.
Leading the way on the boy's side was Jackson Morey (Sr), whose 915 total was good enough for 1st place in the 132 class. Finishing 2nd behind him was teammate Hunter Duffy (Jr) with a 865 total. Last year's state qualifier, Mark Odom (Sr) finished 2nd in the 148 class with a 960 total. New comers Zach Purvis, Andrew Gonzales, and Gunner Hightower all captured medals. Gonzales and Purvis captured 3rd (625 lb. combined lift) and 5th (620 lb. combined lift), respectively, in the 132 class, while Hightower finished 4th in the 181 class, lifting a combined 760. The high lifter for the Panthers was Kolton Lunbeck (Sr) with a 970 combined total earned him 4th in the 165 class.
As a team, Burton tied for 3rd with Thrall among the ten schools present.
The Panthers journey to Taylor for the Duck Invitational on Saturday, January 11th.
