Reliable defense and a second-half offensive surge pushed the 22nd-ranked Blinn College women's basketball team past Angelina College 50-37 in Region XIV play Wednesday in Lufkin, Texas.

The victory moved the Buccaneers to 14-3 overall and 2-0 in the region standings.

Angelina utilized a snail's pace of play to stall Blinn in the first half, and it proved an effective strategy as the Roadrunners led 9-8 after the first quarter before the Bucs inched ahead 19-18 by halftime.

A big game from sophomore forward Tocarra Johnson helped Blinn break out in the second half, and the Bucs used strong defensive pressure to bottle up Angelina.

The Bucs led 32-23 going into the fourth period.

Johnson tallied a season-high 29 points to lead Blinn.

"They slowed the tempo down and we had problems scoring in the first half," Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. "We finally got some rhythm offensively in the second half. Tocarra was special down low tonight and her teammates did a good job of finding her."

Up next, the Bucs continue region play with a road trip to 12th-ranked Trinity Valley Community College at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Athens, Texas.
