SOMERVILLE SCHOOL BOARD TO HOLD FACILITIES PLANNING MEETING
The Somerville School Board will be discussing the future of the school district at their next meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) night.
The Board is holding a community meeting to discuss facilities planning and a potential school bond election on May 3rd.
The meeting will be held at 7pm in the Somerville High School Library.
The board held two previous meetings back in November to discuss issues facing the district.
According to Superintendent Eric Holton, the top issue was to create a middle school campus.
Currently, the Somerville Elementary and Somerville Intermediate Schools share a campus, which houses students from Pre-Kindergarten through the seventh grade. Meanwhile, the secondary campus houses students from eighth through 12th grade.
The district would like to move the older kids off of the elementary campus.
The second issue is to keep students from having to go outside to get to class and find some way to connect the buildings.
Holton sited the Band Hall as one of the buildings in question saying that it could be both a health and safety issue for students to keep going outside to get to the facility.
The third issue is implementing new Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and growing the current programs.
If the Somerville School Board moves forward, it will need to call for the bond election by February 14.
