CITY OF ROUND TOP IN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT COURTHOUSE RENOVATIONS

The City of Round Top recently had discussions about what to do with their 100-year-old Courthouse.

Mayor Judith Vincent held a town hall meeting back on January 25 to discuss renovations.

Vincent told the Fayette County Record that the building is suffering from structural issues including rotten windows, and that as of right now, the facility could not pass fire and building codes.

The City is currently in the process of engaging an architect and engineers to study the building.

Mayor Vincent said that she would prefer to preserve the Courthouse, but that citizens should be prepared.

Options include: leaving it is as and changing out the vinyl windows and doors,

raising up the structure and putting the utilities underneath,

or to tear the whole thing down and rebuild it.

Vincent said in the Record that the decision will be based on a structural analysis of the building, what the engineers and architects decide, what the Council decides, and public input.

She added that they are hoping to have the renovations completed by the Nation’s Semi-quincentennial (250th) Anniversary on July 4, 2026.

  1. If a professional conservation firm were to be contacted, the ideas presented in the story might be quickly discounted and proven options shared with all concerned. And NOT firms who can “do anything wanted” like tear down, replace windows and doors, or rebuild–all while claiming to be ‘preservation’ based. The design is already there, it just needs to be assessed by historic preservation experts.

  2. They just built a $20000 bathroom. I am sure they can afford a new 2 million dollar court house .
