BURTON SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 14-4 WIN OVER CAMERON
The Burton Lady Panther Softball Team got their season off to a good start with a 14-4 win over Cameron Yoe on Saturday.
After falling behind 1-0, Burton came back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Reagan Roemer led it off with a walk, and Natalie Hodde reached after getting hit by a pitch. Amaya Williams singled to load the bases. Bailey Glaesmann hit a two-run double that scored Roemer and Hodde, which gave the Lady Panthers a 2-1 lead. Abby Dowling bunted into a fielder's choice that allowed Williams to score. Glaesmann tacked on another Lady Panther run by scoring on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 Burton.
Burton added a fifth run in the second inning. Roemer reached on an infield hit, and then later scored on an RBI groundout by Williams to give the Lady Panthers a 5-1 advantage.
Cameron came back with a run in the top of the third inning to cut the Burton lead to 5-2.
It would stay that way until the Lady Panthers would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Roemer singled, and two batters later, Williams followed with a two-run homer that put Burton up 7-2.
In the top of the fifth, Cameron tried to make a game of it by scoring two more runs that cut the lead to 7-4.
However, Burton would put the game away with a big seven-run sixth inning. Williams and Paige Fritsch led off with back-to-back walks. Glaesmann hit her second double of the afternoon, which drove in Williams. Dowling walked to load the bases, and Kelsie Hohlt drew a walk to bring home Fritsch with an additional run. Maria Carbajal was hit by a pitch, and Sydney Fischer, who came in to run for Glaesmann, came in to score and make it 10-4.
Roemer came up again, and hit a two-run double that scored Dowling and Hohlt. Hodde drew a walk, and Williams followed with a single that drove in Carbajal. Two batters later, Glaesmann reached on an error that allowed Roemer to score the 14th run and enforce the mercy rule.
Glaesmann pitched all six innings, allowing seven hits, four runs, three of which were earned, while walking four, and striking out 13.
