BURTON ISD DEBATE STUDENTS ADVANCE TO STATE, PLUS ONE ACT PLAY QUALIFIES FOR BI-DISTRICT

Burton ISD students are earning accolades on both the debate and acting stages.

Burton’s debate teams wrapped up district competition this past week and took the top two cross examination spots.  That granted them the district’s two berths for the UIL State Cross Examination Debate Tournament at the University of Texas at Austin campus March 17-18.  This is the Panthers’ first year of debate competition.

The first-place team includes team captain Devlin Douglas, who attained five victories in rounds across the season.  He will be joined at State by Vivian Layman, with three victories of her own.  The two represented Burton at the State Congress Meet in January.

Rubi Rios and Amelia Brown make up the second-place team, each with three victories during the debate season.  Zach Purvis will serve as the first alternate and Autumn Applewhite as the second alternate, both with two victories.

Meanwhile for Burton theater, the program put on “The Brothers Grimm Speculation” this season, where performers recreate all 209 of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales.  During the District 26-2A One Act Play contests, students secured a second place rating and a bi-district qualifying berth for Burton’s best performance in a decade.  The bi-district contest will take place on April 2nd at Sabine Pass High School.

Students were recognized with several awards along with the advancing spot.  Bailey Johnson was named Best Performer.  All-Star Cast honors went to Avary Broussard, Rhett Livingston and Dane Cleboski.  Rubi Rios, Angie Nickerson and Rosa Perez were selected as Honorable Mention Cast.
