GRASS FIRE, GAS LEAKS AMONG EIGHT CALLS FOR BRENHAM FD BETWEEN TUESDAY, EARLY THURSDAY

The Brenham Fire Department responded to two calls on Tuesday, five on Wednesday and one early this (Thursday) morning.

A few minutes after 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, the department was dispatched to a report of a gas leak on Winepress Road, but firefighters identified no immediate hazard upon arrival.  They secured the scene until the City of Brenham Gas Department made location and turned the scene over to them.

Approaching 8:45 p.m., units were called out for another gas leak at Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Burleson Street.  Upon making location, they found a gas leak coming from a valve in the ground and secured the scene until the Gas Department could arrive and fix the valve.

On Wednesday, at 5:30 a.m., firefighters went out to a smoke detector activating at a home in the 900 block of Farm Path.  They found bad batteries in the homeowner’s smoke detectors and replaced all batteries in the residence.  No further problems were found with the detectors, so the department returned to service.

Nearing 10 a.m., BFD members responded to a pull station activation at Silversage Assisted Living, 1121 Prairie Lea Street.  They made location and found the facility was holding a fire drill.  The department waited to make sure no help was needed with resetting the alarm before clearing the call.

Shortly after 11:15 a.m., units were dispatched for a grass fire in the 1100 block of North Ewing Street.  A small grass fire was found next to the roadway.  Firefighters put out the fire and discovered that it started due to an electrical issue with a transformer.  They requested the City of Brenham Electric Department to make location and provided a safe area for electric crews to work until they were finished.

Around 4:45 p.m., the department was called out to the 100 block of West Main Street for a food truck that appeared to be on fire.  Firefighters responded, but when they arrived, no emergency was found.  Workers continued cooking and all BFD members cleared the call.

At 5:15 p.m., BFD personnel went out to the 2400 block of Highway 290 West for a two-vehicle accident.  They made location and checked for injuries, but no one was hurt.  The department provided a safe area for crews until the wreck was cleared from the roadway.

At 3:30 a.m. today, units responded to a gas leak at the Brenham State Supported Living Center, 4001 Highway 36 South.  They arrived and found that the gas line had already been shut off by maintenance.  Firefighters assisted with making sure there was no gas inside the building and located a small reading inside a small portion of the facility.  They then ventilated the building until no readings were present.  Once the department was no longer needed by staff, it returned to service.
