CUBS BEAT COLLEGE STATION 5-2 TO EARN SERIES SWEEP

In front of a lively crowd at Fireman's Park on Thursday night, the Brenham Cub Baseball Team defeated the College Station Cougars 5-2 to sweep their two game series 2-0.

The Cougars got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Lead-off hitter Keaton Johnson reached on an error, and two batters later Cade Corcoran smashed a two-run homer to give College Station the early 2-0 lead.

Brenham got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first inning. Dalton Hart led it off by hitting a double to center field. On a botched pick-off attempt by the Cougars, Hart ended up making it all the way to third base. He then would score on an RBI groundout by Drake Bentke. That made it a 2-1 game.

The Cubs wound up taking the lead in the second inning with three runs. Luke Hardy led it off with a double to right field. Barrett Kohring drew a walk. Caleb Maurer followed with an RBI single to centerfield that allowed Hardy to score the tying run. The next batter, Hart, singled home Kohring to give Brenham their first lead of the game, 3-2. Maurer would later score on an error to give the Cubs a 4-2 lead.

Brenham would add one more insurance run in the fifth inning. Evan Curtis reached on a one-out double. Brody Hemann was brought in as a pinch-runner. Cannon Credeur reached on a dropped third strike, which allowed Hemann to move to third. Kohring then executed a suicide squeeze bunt that brought home Hemann and give the Cubs a 5-2 lead.

Dawson Keim got the win on the hill for Brenham. After a rough start, he settled in and threw 115 pitches over six innings allowing four hits, two runs, only one of them was earned, three walks, and struck out seven. Luke Hardy came in for the seventh inning and retired the side, including striking out the last two batters to earn the save.

Next up for the Cubs, they will host Lake Creek on Tuesday at 7pm at Fireman's Park.
