Kylie Plumley received the sheriff’s office’s first-ever Junior Deputy Lifesaving Award, presented during commissioners court by Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger.

According to Durrenberger, Kylie was at a birthday party in Giddings last month when she noticed a fellow student was unresponsive and face-down in the pool.  Kylie immediately pulled her friend from the water and shouted for help.

Durrenberger said Kylie’s rapid assessment and action allowed adults to quickly begin performing CPR and summon emergency medical services.  He said, “Because of Kylie's awareness, bravery, and quick thinking, a life was saved that day.”

The Junior Deputy Academy, which held its second annual program in April, is held for students between 3rd and 5th grades to learn more about law enforcement and public safety.  Durrenberger said a core component includes training from Lee County EMS so that children are prepared to act in medical emergencies like what occurred last month.

Durrenberger said Kylie’s actions reflect not only her training as a Junior Deputy, but also the values she has learned from her family, as her mother has served for 20 years as a dispatcher with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.  He also said they are “a testament to the mission and core values of our agency: Courtesy, Honesty, Integrity, and Purpose.”
