HAY FIRE, SPARKING STOVE AMONG FIVE CALLS THURSDAY FOR BRENHAM FIRE DEPT.
The Brenham Fire Department responded to five calls on Thursday.
At 10:15 a.m., units were dispatched for a report of a structure fire at a home in the 1300 block of Ledbetter Lane. They made location and found the burner on the stove to be sparking. The power was turned off to the stove at the owner’s request. Once the stove was no longer a fire hazard, all BFD members cleared the call.
At 11 a.m., the department went out to a fire alarm at the Brenham State Supported Living Center, 4001 Highway 36 South. Personnel arrived on location and found that the bad detector from the previous day’s alarm was being replaced by maintenance staff at the facility, and that the alarm was set off by accident while changing the smoke detector.
At 3 p.m., firefighters responded to a home in the 1400 block of South Chappell Hill Street for a fire alarm. They arrived and found the fire alarm system was undergoing testing, so they assisted in returning the alarm to normal operations.
At 6 p.m., BPD personnel were called out to a gas leak at a home in the 700 block of Sycamore Street. Upon arrival, they found the gas leak was coming from the meter outside. They waited until the City of Brenham Gas Department made location to release them from the call.
At 8:15 p.m., firefighters were sent out for a smoke investigation in the 3300 block of Wonder Hill Road. The large plume of smoke was coming from an address in the Salem Volunteer Fire Department’s response area. Salem units arrived and found about 10-15 acres of windrowed hay that was unable to be bailed being burned. Members of the Brenham Fire Department and the Salem and Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Departments worked together with the property owner to extinguish the fire.
