MAY SALES TAX REBATES UP FOR WASHINGTON CO. & BRENHAM, DOWN FOR BURTON

  

Sales and tax distributions for the month of May were up for Washington County and the City of Brenham, but down for the City of Burton.

Washington County received $454,529 this month, up 1.69 percent from the $446,944 it collected last May.  For 2026 so far, the county’s rebates come out to $2,107,632, up 3.62 percent from the $2,033,838 it had brought in through May 2025.

The City of Brenham’s May rebate saw an increase of 17.9 percent in comparison to last May, coming in at $1,055,151 this May after getting $894,906 a year ago.  To date, the city has collected $4,463,817, up 0.75 percent from this time a year ago, when it had received $4,430,471.

The City of Burton saw a significant decline in its May rebate, bringing in $13,844 this month after receiving $41,841 last May, a drop of 66.91 percent.  The city’s receipts for the year add up to $65,780, a 22.93 percent decrease from the $85,358 it tallied through May of a year ago.

Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced $1.4 billion in local sales tax allocations for the month of May, up 7.7 percent from last May and up 5.4 percent for the year so far.

May’s allocations are based on sales made in March by businesses that report tax monthly and sales made in January, February and March by quarterly filers.
