GIDDINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY RE-OPENING PUSHED BACK TO AUGUST

A rough couple of months for the Giddings Public Library is now looking like it is going to last a little longer.

The library had to be shut down back on April 6 after flooding was found in various areas of their building. The cause was determined to be a broken pipe that dumped 500 gallons of water into the library.

According to the library’s website, they were initially expecting just a one-week closure. However, during clean-up, asbestos was found beneath the old carpet.

The insurance company determined that all the carpet in the main library area needed to be replaced, which pushed the expected closure time to three months. That pushed the re-opening to mid-July.

On April 20, the library opened a smaller, temporary location inside the lobby of the Giddings Economic Development Corporation, which is located at 924 East Austin Street.

The smaller location has 500 books ready for checkout. They are also offering 40,000 digital materials that can be accessed via an app called Cloud Library.  Visit www.giddingspubliclibrary.org for instructions on how to use the app.

The smaller location has hours of 10am-6pm Monday thru Friday, and Saturday from 10am-1pm.

Library Director Jessi Akins told the Giddings Times that they have now learned of supply-chain delays, and so the re-opening date has again been pushed back, this time to mid-August.

Akins also is asking the community to hold off on book donations to the library temporarily. She said she appreciates everyone thinking of them, but right now, they just don’t have the room for extra books.
