FAYETTE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE MAKES MAJOR DRUG BUST
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office made a big drug bust during a traffic stop last week.
The announcement of the arrest came on Monday.
According to Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek, the K-9 unit of Sgt. Randy Thumann and his companion Kolt made a traffic stop on a Chevy Traverse on Wednesday just before 1pm.
The vehicle was traveling on I-10 at Mile Marker 658 just west of Flatonia.
After speaking with the driver, 41-year-old Julio Cesar Gomez Cruz of Mexico, Sgt. Thumann became suspicious and deployed Kolt.
Kolt alerted Thumann to the odor of illegal narcotics coming from the vehicle.
A search of the Chevy Traverse led to the discovery of 17 kilos of cocaine in an after-market compartment that was built into the floor.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the cocaine has a value of $1.7 million.
Cruz was arrested for felony cocaine possession and taken to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center in La Grange.
