SPECTATOR: CELEBRATIONS AND RECOGNITION
Several important events occurred over the past couple of weeks that warrant our congratulations. First, Brenham got back to its German roots for the 124th year of the Maifest celebration in downtown and at Fireman’s Park. While the Maifest is often criticized as not being “what it used to be”, it appears that President Heather Thielemann and the Maifest Board have it headed in the right direction. A tremendous amount of work by the Board, the parents of the Maifest royalty, their family, friends and other volunteers goes into the three day festival. But it’s worth it to preserve Brenham’s heritage, and do a little celebrating over the coming of spring!
Brenham High Schools top scholars and athletes were recognized during two separate programs the past two Mondays. I applaud all of the families, businesses and organizations that donate money for the thousands of dollars in scholarships handed out to graduating seniors. More than anything, those scholarships show this community’s dedication to education and hard work. As for sports, Athletic Director Glen West and his coaching staff are to be applauded for another tremendous year. Rest assured that our kids are not only being coached to succeed on the playing fields, but also in life.
And finally, congratulations to a family and company that have become some of the biggest supporters of our community. Mike Hopkins Distributing is celebrating 25 years in Brenham. Hardly an event goes by in our community that is not supported in one way or another by the Hopkins family.
All of these things go into making Brenham and Washington County a wonderful place to live. And that’s the way it looks to this Spectator.
