STATE TO FORM CONNECTED AND AUTOMATED VEHICLE TASK FORCE
The Texas Department of Transportation has announced it will create a task force to advance Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) in Texas.
The task force is designed to be a resource for information and coordination on ongoing CAV projects, investments, and initiatives in the state.
In addition to forming partnerships and documenting public and private efforts, the task force will host forums and report lessons learned to aid progress.
Governor Greg Abbott said as transportation technology moves forward, this task force will help ensure that Texas continues to innovate. TxDOT Executive Director James Bass said as CAV’s become more prominent, TxDOT looks forward to furthering these efforts.
Some of TxDOT’s stated reasons for its interest in CAV’s are their potential to reduce crashes and improve roadway safety. In addition, TxDOT sees them as ways to reinvent personal and commercial mobility with quality of life and economic benefits.
The task force looks to enable companies to pursue ideas around CAV technology in a business-friendly way. It also hopes to build on legislation passed by the 85th Legislature, related to how CAV’s can operate in Texas.
