WATERMELON RUN FOR THE FALLEN SET FOR AUGUST 17TH IN HEMPSTEAD
Hempstead will be hosting the 10thAnnual Watermelon Run for the Fallen in August.
The solemn event will be on August 17thto honor all of the Texas fallen. It began in 2010 in memory of Hempstead native Staff Sergeant Jeffery Lee Hartley who was killed in action on April 8th, 2008. Jeffery attended Hempstead High School and was proud to be from Texas as well as Hempstead.
The event will feature a team of skydivers along with Jay Stokes, who holds the world record for the most skydives in 24 hours. The Emmy Award winning Darby Ledbetter and the Band of Brothers, as well as the Ziggy Moonshine Band, will provide live music. Ken Pridgeon will be present with portraits of the fallen service men and women. There will also be many military static displays including an Apache helicopter and a military amphibious vehicle.
Last year, the event had approximately 2,000 in attendance, and this year, they are expecting over 4,000 to attend.
