PANTHERS DROP 13-0 DECISION AT RUNGE
The Burton Panthers fell to 0-2 on the early season after dropping a 13-0 decision at Runge, Friday night.
It took the Yellow Jackets (1-1) just over a minute and a half to get on the board with a 36-yard run by senior quarterback Daniel Mendoza.
Mendoza set up the touchdown when he raced over 30 yards on a fake punt one play earlier.
The Panther defense did a good job shutting down Runge the rest of the way, but struggled moving the ball throughout the first half.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead early in the second quarter, when Josh Aguilar picked off a Vincente Veliz pass and returned it 35 yards for the touchdown, making it 13-0.
Neither team would score the rest of the way, but the Panthers' offense did seem to click after abandoning the spread offense and shifting into the traditional I-formation.
On the opening drive of the second half, the Panthers drove the ball deep into Runge territory, but came up short on fourth-and-goal from the one yard line.
In the fourth quarter, the Panthers again mounted an impressive drive, taking the ball to the Yellow Jackets' 25 yard line but again could not convert on fourth down.
The Panthers will look for their first win of the season next Friday when they take on Brazos Consolidated in their home opener.
Kickoff at Panther Stadium is slated for 7:30, with the pre-game show set for 7:00 on AM-1280 KWHI, FM 101.7 and www.kwhi.com.
