The Washington County Chamber of Commerce is helping organize a local task force to help try and keep the Brenham State Supported Living Center off a state closure list.

Chamber President and CEO Page Michel says the Center is one of the county’s largest employers and an vital part of the local economy…

Last year, the Sunset Advisory Commission recommended that six of the 13 state supported living centers be closed to save costs.

While the Brenham Center was not specifically targeted, Michel says the time to formulate a plan is now…

Michel says the center also has the reputation of being one of the top caregivers for special needs people.

Michel said the local task force has members from every walk of life and is formidable group…

The chair of the task force is Liz Hopkins, the chari of the chamber’s board of directors.

Other members include: Joel Romo, Wendy Yates, Cathy Cole, Renee Mueller, Randy Weidemann, Michael Pittman, Jane Hinze, Wesley Brinkmeyer, Gracie Slattery, Dr. Bobby Marek, the Rev. Ed Triem, police Chief Rex Phelps and Cpl. Chris Jackson.

Michel said the task force is open to anyone concerned about preserving the center.

She is urging anyone interested in participating to contact the chamber at 836-3695.
