LANDFILL PROPERTY DEAL FINALIZED
After purchasing the land 24 years ago, the City of Brenham has finalized a deal to sell the property once earmarked for use as a city landfill.
The property, located near Chappell Hill, was sold to MCRP Interests Ltd. for $7,500 an acre.
City Manager Terry Roberts says the city will get nearly $1.5-million for the 204-acre tract.
The money will go into the city’s general fund.
The city originally purchased the property for a landfill and eventually received a state permit over opposition from local landowners.
The council later, however, abandoned the permit because it was later determined it would not be economically feasible to use it as a landfill unless refuse from outside Brenham was accepted.
Since then, it has been used as a shooting range by the Brenham Police Department and by a model airplane club.
The council first voted in 2006 to put the property on the market, but had not received any offers they deemed acceptable until now.
