HOMELAND SECURITY PROGRAM CRITICIZED
The Homeland Security Program that jailers use to submit fingerprints to everyone booked into jail, is under fire for being unconstitutional, continues to be used in all Texas counties, while other counties across the nation are discontinuing the practice.
The program screens prisoners through an immigration database, and upon at match, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officials can file “detainer request” with local law enforcement agencies. The program is being touted as the “single best tool” to target dangerous criminals.
Critics of the program say it targets Latinos and deports illegal immigrants caught for minor crimes, and limits law enforcement resources.
