CANNERY KITCHEN TO HOLD BLACK HISTORY FORUMS IN FEBRUARY
As part of Black History Month, the Cannery Kitchen in Brenham will host a series of Black History Forums all through the month of February.
The forums will be held each Monday in February from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will be focused on the theme “Success through Succession: Planning through Christ-Centered, Multi-Generation, Culturally Diverse Servant-Leadership.”
The first program on February 7th will feature several business owners and professionals as they discuss creating currency through kinship and making generational wealth. Members of the forum panel will include Bradley Sanders (Brenham High School Class of 1995), LaToya Beal (Class of 2003), Darius Smith (Class of 2011), Brian and Velencia Mason (Class of 2003), LaKesha Morgan (Class of 2000), Kenya Mitchell (Class of 2002) and Dallas Coleman (Class of 2002).
Following that will be a program on February 14th celebrating cultural expressions of music, poetry and art. Speakers will include Dr. Karmen Williams, assistant professor of population health informatics at the City University of New York, and Susan Meyers, president of the Association of Holocaust Organizations.
The third forum on February 21st will host local pastors as they discuss church and how it is reaching out to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Slated to speak are Pastor Calvin Kossie, president of the Washington County Ministerial Association, Pastor Joel Knox of the Vineyard Church of Brenham, Pastor Patricia Graves of Souls Chapel AME Church, Pastor Phil Geleske of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Dr. John D. Harris of Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church.
The fourth and final program on February 28th will be a conversation with local dignitaries and officials about the current state of the community and what is to come. Guests will be Pastor Calvin Kossie, State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, Washington County Judge John Durrenberger, Brenham Mayor Milton Tate, Blinn College Director of Diversity and Inclusion Dr. Bennie Graves, Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Tylor Chaplin, Washington County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Doug Zwiener, Brenham Police Chief and Blinn College Police Chief John Chancellor.
The forums are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be catered by LaToya Beal of Wild Flour Bakeshop.
