BRENHAM CUB BASEBALL PREVIEW

Jacob Mabie

The Brenham Cub Baseball Team returns this (Monday) evening to start the 2023 season at home against former district foe, Katy Paetow.

The Cubs are coming off an exciting season last year that saw them finish 26-13-1 overall, and 11-5 in district play.

They were the second place team behind Magnolia, and went three rounds deep in the playoffs. Brenham beat Pflugerville Hendrickson in bi-district 2-0, College Station in area 2-1, but then lost to State Finalist Friendswood.

Brenham won four of their five scrimmages, including beating Oak Ridge 9-3 this past Friday.

It will be a young team this season after graduating 17 seniors last year.

One of the big question marks going into the season will be the pitching staff. Last year's staff featured seniors Ethan Jezierski, Mason Lampe, Blane Bolcerek, and Cayden Shields handling the bulk of the duties on the mound.

This year, Lane Sparks is expected to take the lead along with returners Eric Aschenbeck, Rylan Wooten, and R.J. Ratcliff. Also figuring into the mix are Brody Hemann, Landry Mendoza, Preston Lee, Jacob Mabie, Dawson Keim, Drake Bentke, Brady Boenker, Brayden Goss, Mason Finke, and Gunner Gee.

In the field, Jacob Mabie, a four year starter on varsity, returns for his senior season. Other returning starters include Gunner Gee at first base, Rylan Wooten at shortstop, and Lane Sparks in centerfield.

The season begins tonight (Monday) against Paetow at 6:30pm at Fireman's Park. KWHI will be broadcasting live beginning with Sportsline at 5:35pm, followed by the pregame at 6:05pm.

The Cubs will then be going to the Santa Fe Tournament Thursday-Saturday.

The Brenham Alumni Tournament is going to be held March 9-11. District play opens Tuesday, March 14, against College Station. at Fireman's Park.
