CUBETTES OPEN LEADOFF CLASSIC WITH A WIN
The Brenham Cubette Softball Team opened their annual Leadoff Classic with a 5-1 victory over Huffman Hargrave at Alumni Field earlier today (Thursday).
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, when one of Huffman's players hit a solo homer to make it 1-0 Falcons.
Brenham would get the run back and then some in the bottom of the fifth. Avery Maurer reached on a walk, and stole second.
Halle Scheel singled to left field, and on an error by the leftfielder, Maurer scored and Scheel went to second to tie it 1-1.
Kaylyn Rodriguez followed with a walk, and then Sarah Mabie unloaded a three run homer, which put the Cubettes up 4-1.
Brenham would get one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kinley Antkowiak tripled, and would later score on an RBI groundout by Kylie Baker to put the Cubettes up 5-1.
Heidi Busker got the start and went four innings, allowing one run, on four hits, one walk, and picking up three strikeouts. Baker got the win in relief going the final three innings without allowing a run. She gave up only one hit and one walk, while striking out four.
