STUDENTS TAKE PART IN PATRIOT’S PEN CONTEST

  

Every year, students in grades 6-8 participate in the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest with the opportunity to compete for more than $1.4 million in state and national awards.

This contest prompts young students to explore American history and reflect on their personal experiences in today's society by crafting a 300 to 400-word essay.

Ten Brenham Junior High students were awarded from the VFW post for their papers that they wrote for the VFW’s Patriot's Pen Contest. The theme this year was “How Are You Inspired by America?”

Those students are Henry Mathis, Beckett Neil, Kannon Koehler, Kaisen Ashorn, Avery Bell, Aldyn Jaks, Bailey Rogers, Chloe Vavra, Logan Boeker, and Mayson Weatherly.

Weatherly’s Patriot’s Pen Paper was selected for the District 17 Contest, where he placed in the top three and his paper was then sent on to the State Contest.

Meanwhile, Dylan Klovenski was chosen to represent Brenham ISD and the VFW Post for the VFW Teacher of the Year Contest.

Klovenski is an 8th Grade History teacher and department chair at Brenham Junior High. He has worked as an 8th grade teacher in Brenham for the last 5 years.

He said that he loves having the opportunity to pass his passion for history and to build rapport with his students by using stories that he has learned about American History through word of mouth or personal research.
