BRENHAM CUB FOOTBALL PREVIEW
The Brenham Cub Football Team begins the 2024 season this Friday night when they go on the road to renew their rivalry with the Huntsville Hornets.
The Cubs are in their third season under Head Coach Danny Youngs. Youngs said he has been pleased with the workouts so far. The players have been putting in the work, and with this being the third year in the program, they know what is expected of them.
For the second year in a row, Jordan Harvey (Sr.) will be handling the quarterbacking duties for Brenham. Last year as a junior, he completed 131 out of 207 passes (63%) for 1,885 yards and 12 touchdowns. Harvey also carried the ball 108 times for 308 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.
Harvey said he is excited for the season, and feels like with so many of his teammates getting to play together again this season that it will help their team chemistry going forward.
Jakoby Dixon (So.), who had a breakout season as a freshman last year, returns as the starting runningback. Last season, Dixon had 133 carries for 1,181 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also caught 34 passes for 502 yards and five more touchdowns. Cartelle Brown (Jr.), who played primarily on defense in 2023, will see some time in the backfield as well.
Chris Guidry (Jr.) returns for another season after catching 25 passes for 658 yards and three touchdowns. He will be joined by Deontae Martin (Sr.), and Trae Bowers (Sr.). Hagen Frank (Jr.) will be the starting H-Back for the team.
The battle for positions on the starting offensive line was one of the toughest for the Cubs. Offensive Coordinator Derek Lopez said that this year, the starters will consist of Antonie Najera (Jr.), Andrew Mojica (Jr.), and Landon Flisowski (Sr.) along with sophomores Aaron Carlisle and Dawson Moran.
The defense has some spaces to fill with several new faces with only three returning starters from last year.
On defense, Safety Jabreon Moore (Sr.) returns for his senior season with the Cubs, and his third as a varsity starter.
Coach Youngs, said he feels like the linebacking corp. has a chance to be really strong this year. He is looking for a big year from Doyle Brown (Jr.), Caleb Espinoza (Jr.), and Kristian Prosper (Jr.).
On Special Teams, Bleu Cienega (So.) will handle the placekicking duties, while Landon Zelenka (Jr.) will do the punting.
With realignment this past February, the Cubs will be looking at a very different district with Rudder begin the only team besides Brenham that remained from last year. They'll be joined by Belton, Killeen, Waco, and Waco University.
Dave Campbell's Texas Football picks the Cubs to finish first, but Youngs felt like the magazine wasn't giving the other schools enough credit, and the road to championship is going to be much tougher.
Brenham opens the regular season against former district foe, Huntsville, this Friday night. Last year, when they were still in the same district, Huntsville won a 39-36 shootout, and Coach Youngs knows it will be a good first test.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
