BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS LENGTHY MEETING
The Brenham School Board approved the construction of a greenhouse donated to the Highschool Career and Technical Education Department at their meeting Monday night. The greenhouse was donated by Brianna’s Fine Salad Dressings and is valued at $13,000. The old greenhouse came down in a windstorm created by Hurricane Beryl.
The board members also held a public hearing on the annual School “FIRST” financial accountability rating for Brenham ISD. Chief Financial Officer for the District, Darrell St. Clair, presented the data from the TEA plan assessment, based on data from the 2022-23 school year. This year, the school district scored a B or Above Standard Achievement. Last year, the district scored an A. St. Clair said this was because of several coding errors and said those would be rectified in next year's score.
Five people spoke during the Public Comment part of the meeting. Most commented on the selection of books that require parent approval to check out from the high school library that they claimed contain explicit material. One person spoke out about attacks on Jewish students since the war on Hamas began. Superintendent Clay Gillentine said that he understood the restriction on allowing discussion on things not on the agenda, but that he wanted the person to call him the next day to take the next step.
Citizens United for Brenham, or CUB program received special recognition at the meeting as did the Brenham Jr. High School. School board also heard updates on the finances for the district, Campus and District Improvement Plans, and the Bilingual and ESL programs. The next Brenham School Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 4th at 12 noon at the Central Office at 711 East Mansfield Street.
