The Austin County Sheriff’s Office hosted a gathering on Thursday to honor a long-time deputy on the occasion of his retirement.

Reserve Deputy Ervin Paben is calling it a career after 67 years of dedicated law enforcement service.

Paben began his career in 1958 when he was sworn in as a Waller County Sheriff’s Deputy at the age of 18.

He later transferred and served the Waller County Precinct Four Constable’s Office.

In 2005, Ervin joined the Austin County Sheriff’s Office , and over the years worked for multiple sheriffs including Truman Maddox, Bubba Brzozowski, DeWayne Burger, and the current sheriff, Jack Brandes.

During his time in Austin County, Paben has been known as “the Trail Ride Deputy”, and rode guard for both the Salt Grass and St. Jude’s Trail Rides annually.

In addition to the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, Paben was joined by his family, members of the Salt Grass Ride, Nethaniel Gjesdal, who serves as the District Director for State Representative Stan Kitzman, and several other law enforcement agencies.
