LADY PANTHERS SOFTBALL OPENS REGION-SEMIFINAL SERIES WITH A WIN
The Burton Lady Panther Softball Team opened up their Region Semifinal series against Woodsboro with an 8-2 victory last (Thursday) night in Yoakum.
Burton jumped out early with five runs in the first inning. Lexi Broesche singled, and then scored on a triple by Amaya Williams. Williams later scored on an error to give the Lady Panthers an early 2-0 advantage. Walks and errors by Woodsboro led to three more runs and allowed Burton to increase their lead to 5-0.
The Lady Eagles came back with runs in the second and the fourth to cut the lead down to 5-2.
Burton took advantage of two more errors in the top of the fifth inning for Paige Fritsch to score and make it 6-2 Lady Panthers.
In the top of the sixth, Laci Broesche walked, stole second, went to third on another error, and scored on a squeeze bunt by Aerynn Huntsman. That increased the Burton lead to 7-2.
Woodsboro committed six errors in the game.
The Lady Panthers got one more run in the top of the seventh inning on a solo homer by Williams, her 20th of the season, which made it 8-2 Burton.
Lexi Broesche went the distance in the circle to get the win. She also struck out eight batters along the way.
With the win, the Lady Panthers take a 1-0 lead in the series. Game two is tonight (Friday) at 6pm in Yoakum. Darrell Kieke and I will have live coverage beginning with the pregame on the KWHI.com Sports Alternate Feed.
If Burton wins, the series is over, and they move on to face the winner of Mumford and Shiner for the Region Championship next week.
If Woodsboro wins, they will have to come back to Yoakum on Saturday morning to play a third and deciding game at 11am (10:30am pregame on the KWHI.com Sports Alternate Feed).
