A convicted Brazos County killer has been deemed mentally unfit for execution.

In 2003, Marcus Druery was convicted for the 2002 murder of a Waco college student whose body was dumped on Druery family property in rural Brazos County.

Druery was scheduled to die in August of 2012, but the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals stayed his execution, eventually granting a new competency hearing.

Two court-appointed psychiatrists say Druery suffers from mental illness that leaves him unable to understand why he is being punished, something required by law before an execution.

Druery's lawyers claimed he suffered from schizophrenia.

Prosecutors say they won't contest his incompetency claim unless there are new developments.
