COUNTY COMMISSIONERS APPROVE FLOOD REPAIR GRANT

The Washington County Commissioners accepted a $ 74,512 grant from the Texas Division of Emergency Management at their meeting this (Tuesday) morning.  The grant represents a 75 percent reimbursement of money the county has spent for emergency repairs immediately after the flooding event last May.  The county incurred an estimated 1.7 million dollars total in damage during the flooding.  The state reimbursements are handled on a per case basis as the county makes repairs.  County Judge John Brieden said he expects more grant approvals for repairs in the upcoming months.

In other action, commissioners appointed 8 people to a 1 year term with the Homeland Security Advisory Committee. Reappointed to the board were Brenham Fire Chief Ricky Boeker, Washington County Commissioner Kirk Hanath, Dr. William Loesch, EMS Director Kevin Deramus, County Emergency Coordinator Bryan Ruemke, and Captain Dant Lange of the Brenham Police Department. New to the board will be Sergeant Eddie Ocanas of the Sheriff’s office and Judge Douglas Zwiener.  The committee’s primary duty is to recommend to the County Commissioners how the state Homeland Security grants are to be spent.

The commissioners also approved a cooperative purchasing agreement with the Harris County Department of Education.  The agreement will allow the county the option of purchasing items directly through the program instead of going out for bids.

In other action, the commissioners approved a minor change to the By-Laws of the Washington County Salary Review Committee and approved a water line crossing at 5573 Rehburg Road.

  1. when will the road on Highway 36 and Wolf Creek Bridge get fixed. Its been two years since the flood . Is there really something wrong with the bridge. It gets very tight traffic out there when the 18 wheel trucks come thru there with all the damaged cones laying everywhere

    Hope it gets fixed soon.

    1. It’s been one month shy of ONE YEARS since the flood that caused that bridge to be closed down to two lanes. I do agree that it is dangerous with all of the cones knocked over, 18-wheelers driving through, heavy traffic. I myself have had to call Washington County Dispatch on numerous occasions regarding cones in the lanes of traffic. What would happen if a small car, lowered truck, or motorcycle went through & hit them? Bad accident that could have been prevented if work to fix the bridge had been done in a timely manner. I myself cannot figure out why work hasn’t even begun on that area of HWY 36. If the bridge is indeed damaged, I would think that the two lanes being used for almost a year are now damaged. When is construction on this major hazard going to begin?

      1. So….have either of you contacted your commissioner about this? Or the road and bridge department? I think that would be a better avenue to voice your concerns to someone who may have the authority to get something done about it.

        1. Unfortunately, the Road & Bridge Department nor the County Commissioner has a say about this issue. It is a TXDOT (state) bridge. All Farm to Market roads in Washington County are maintained by the state, not the county. I would recommend contacting the Texas Department of Transportation (979-836-9359) regarding the status.
