BAYLOR SAYS NO TO CONCEALED HANDGUNS

Baylor University President Ken Starr says the school will not be allowing concealed handgun license holders to bring their guns on the Waco campus.

Texas lawmakers in 2015 forced the state's public schools to allow guns inside campus classrooms and buildings but allowed private schools to continue banning them.

Baylor is the latest private school to ban guns. Southern Methodist, Rice and Texas Christian universities previously announced they will also ban weapons.

The law takes effect Aug. 1. State lawmakers said when they passed the bill they wanted to respect the property rights of private schools.

Several public schools, notably the University of Texas at Austin, have seen fierce protests to guns on campus from faculty, students and staff.

  1. All Texas colleges gain considerable extra revenue with out of state / country tuitions. Perhaps it is better to say the university is wise knowing handguns on the campus will decrease students from out of state or country. I am not the only parent who would not want my child on a gun toting campus. As sure as the sun is out today, college revenues will be effected and cost of attendance will rise. I am not against hunting or small handgun weapons, and I do not care for labels applied to wise educators. Blessed are the peacemakers.

    1. Unfortunately, only law-abiding citizens respect gun-free zones. As the wife of a college professor (public school), I am so thankful that my husband will now have the opportunity to defend himself and his students.

      1. No offense but I highly doubt your husband is regularly train at handling high stress situations, regular training at shooting, trained not to shoot innocent students and I can go on and on. The fact is your husband is an educator, not a private security guard for the students.

Again no offense, I’m sure your husband is a great Teacher.

        1. Hey Amber, I can document numerous incidents of civilians stopping active shooters BEFORE the cops got there and saved lives. You cannot cite one event where the armed good guy civilian accidentally shot a noncombatant during an active shooter situation. Many of us civilian sheepdogs are better trained than the cops. Numerous LE officers shoot at my range and my crew can out shoot 80% of them. Being a government employee does not make you a good gunfighter.

          1. Mr Deans is absolutely correct! All this action does is lets the criminal and terrorists know that this and all campuses that are a gun free campus is a target rich environment full of sheep not capable of protecting themselves. A sad fact is the first minutes or seconds of a active shooter situation is unavoidable. A legally licensed concealed carrier that is on scene, trained and willing to take action against the treat is proven may times over to reduce the casualties of innocent civilians or stop the treat before law enforcement arrives. The liberals in this country had made the gun, not the criminal the issue. Criminals and terrorists DO NOT respect gun free zones or gun laws! In the current situation in our country, active shooter situations have skyrocketed to a whole new level. I hope these campuses realize they have just put the students and facility in grave danger.

        2. No offense taken, Amber. You are correct that my husband does not receive regular training in these areas. And you are also correct in saying that he is a teacher, not a private security guard. But he is responsible for those students. If there is a fire, gas leak, or some similar emergency, he will do what he can to ensure his students’ safety. The same goes for an active shooter situation. He may not have time to wait for police to arrive. He and his students stand a much better chance of surviving if they can arm themselves.

Hopefully, just the knowledge that anyone in the room could be packing heat will be a deterrent to most prospective assailants.

    2. Apparently the sun must be the reason for rising college attendance costs because every time you turn around, higher education is raising tuition and fees.
That being said, perhaps Jerusalem-on-the- Brazos may come around in a few years to come and allow concealed carry like they have done with dancing and even drinking on campus. They just need time to let it all sink in.

  2. The private university SHEEP have spoken.

That’s why my daughters will be going to a public Texas university like A&M or UT where SheepDogs are allowed to protect my daughters from the active shooter Wolf.
