BLINN TO OFFER INTRO TO ENGINEERING CLASS

Students who enjoy using mathematics, science, and creativity to overcome challenges will enjoy Blinn College’s Introduction to Engineering course this Fall.

Available on both the Brenham and Bryan campuses this Fall, ENGR 1201: Introduction to Engineering consists of two lecture hours and one lab hour per week, and provides an introduction to the engineering profession, with an emphasis on technical communication and team-based design.

Students are introduced to numerous engineering disciplines and related careers. The course provides students a glimpse of a variety of engineering fields, allowing them to explore whether an engineering major may be right for them.

“What stood out to me most were the different codes of ethics and the engineering design process,” said Juan Vargas, who completed the course last Fall. “In fact, I am interning at Strand Associates, where the very same design process is employed, and thanks to ENGR 1201, I am familiar with the various steps.”

Vargas said he discussed many of the things he learned from the course during his interview for the position. That knowledge, along with his hands-on experience with MATLAB and AutoCAD, have helped him thrive as he gains professional experience.

To register, students must have successfully completed MATH 1314, or have completed or be co-enrolled in MATH 1414.

Blinn’s academic transfer rate regularly ranks among the highest in the state and the nation. According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), Blinn’s academic transfer rate of 34.2 percent ranks second in the state and exceeds the statewide average of 21.1 percent.

THECB data shows that Blinn students who take 30 credit hours during the 2017-18 school year will save $3,717, approximately 42 percent, in tuition and fees compared to state residents at the average Texas public university.

Blinn’s Fall semester begins Monday, Aug. 28. To register, visit www.blinn.edu.  Story and photo courtesy of Blinn College.
