BURTON TO GET NEW POLICE CAR

The Burton Police Department will be getting a new patrol unit.

The city council approved the purchase of a new Chevy Tahoe, as an “emergency purchase” for the department.

The cost of the vehicle, along with equipment and labor will total $41,105.  Mayor David Zajicek says with credit and trade-in on the old unit, the final cost to the city will be $33,655.

Police Chief Greg Rolling says the need for enhanced patrol lights is an important issue as well as the need for a new radar unit.

After an executive session, the council unanimously approved the purchase—with council member Dale Schwartz abstaining due to conflict of interest.

The city will finance the purchase of the patrol unit through Burton State Bank, with a 60-month note.

  1. I agree, we need to cut wasteful spending called “Emergency Purchase”. I feel we need to shut down the Police Department/Municipal Court because it is losing money each and every month if the accounting was done correctly. Go back to the basics with just a part-time secretary for the utility department and cut the unnecessary payrolls. I’m from the “Old School” and we need to cut spending instead of always increasing the burden of Citizens.

  2. I agree with Concerned Citizen. The City Council have raised our water/sewer bills already, sales tax has been raised, property tax has been raised, and they are still in so much debt we will never get out of it. Now, they opt to spend all this money on a new patrol car. Why not repair the one we have? I’m sure that would be a lot less money. Besides, Burton isn’t that big!! Mileage shouldn’t be outrageous!! Most of Burton citizens are senior citizens, most on fixed income. How can the council expect to keep spending money hand over fist and just expect to keep raising our monthly bills? Rediculous decision mayor and council members!! Keep throwing money into a part time police department? I think not!! Better wake up!! Bankruptcy is not an option, but that’s exactly where we are heading!!

  3. The city is making the mistake of “trading in”
The old Tahoe, it’s worth more than 5k they should have sold it via sealed bids , with a reserve of 5k , they are not business minded with others money.

  4. To the Mayor, Council Members and Citizens of Burton,

According to everything I have heard and read, the City is in very poor financial condition and can’t afford the debts we have already, so why in the heck are we buying a new patrol vehicle? According to what I see, our police officer is writing more tickets for Washington County than for the City of Burton. We are paying all the bills, payroll, repairs, insurance, maintenance, etc.. Where is the accountability to the citizens of Burton??? Wake up people. We need to cut costs instead of increasing rates, taxes, etc. Do we really need a police department in Burton?? I say NO.
