CITY OF SOMERVILLE RECEIVES NEW DISASTER SIREN

The city of Somerville received and has installed a siren in the community that will, by using four different tones, will let the public know of eminent dangers in the area.

The community donated nearly $20,000 for the purchase, and the tones, in which there would be a different tone for different events, may be used to indicate such things as tornadoes or chemical spills, but would not be the only way citizens would be notified.

The Burleson County Emergency Management System as well as law enforcement would also be spreading the word of events such as evacuations.

City Administrator martin Mangum says that the people who donated to purchase the siren did it because they cared about the community and were willing to donate to the purchase.

  1. Thanks to those fine citizens of Sometville for protecting their friends and neighbors. Can anyone in an official capacity in our city tell us if we have a similar device? If not, why don’t we? And if we do, what does each tone signify?

    1. Brenham to my knowledge doesn’t have one. However if Brenham did get funding for a siren they would need multiple sirens due to the population spread. Consider this: Brenham residents voted for a quite zone for all of the Railroad crossings in town. Do you think residents are going to want a siren that makes a lot of noise installed? A tornado siren should go every time a tornado has been spotted by radar or by person. However that isn’t always true.

I am glad Somerville got a siren since other than the NWS radio there’s not much in the way to alert residents of impending danger. Also most residents in Somerville don’t mind the noise associated with everything.

      1. And the railroad quiet zone is stupid. I remember when a lady came to my door wanting me to sign the petition for it- I believe she was the one that bought a vacant lot right next to the tracks, built a nice house on it, then sold it right after the system was implemented…. needless to say, she didn’t get my signature .
