  1. Ok. I know the city of Brenham is aggravated that crime is on the rise. However, bashing the police officers and the chief of police is un called for. How do you expect for them to be every all day every day? Do they know exactly when that next drug deal is going to take place? Or when the next person is going to be murdered? Brenham is growing rapidly and unfortunately it’s bringing in more criminals as well. There are always going to be bad people doing bad things and as hard as the law enforcement in our town try to control it, it’s always going to happen. It’s our jobs to protect our stuff. Lock your doors, don’t leave your vehicles un locked, protect your things and the police can try and concentrate on patrolling these areas instead of taking your report on stolen property because you’ve left your house or your vehicle unlocked. I know if a thief wants your belongings, even if your things are locked up tight they will get your things but let’s try and make it a little harder. I’m not sure why anyone would think because we live in a small town that no one will break into your home our vehicles. I live in the country and I lock all my cars and my home. We live in a time where we have to do that. Also, I can personally tell you that officers do NOT get paid 20,000 in 3 or so months. My loved one is a police officers with the city of Brenham and he does an excellent job and he has an excellent man to look up to. Cheif Phelps is doing everything that he possibly can to keep crime controled it’s not as easy as some people may think.

  2. How in the world are the police supposed to know when and where these crimes are going to take place?
I don’t think it’s very fair to blame the police for the crime in Brenham. How many articles do you read on KWHI about drugs being found from a traffic stop? A bunch.
Well for every article you read, there are many you never hear about. Many.
I suggest you go down to Radio Shack and buy a scanner and listen to all the nonsense calls that the police are constantly on. Maybe the county and city need more police to patrol the area. Because the population is growing but the number of deputies has not.
Let’s start concentrating on the real issues- man power. Instead of pointing the finger at the men and women who are out there fighting this crime every day.

    1. My point in case-the residents need to be more vigil instead of looking the other way. Take back our town and do not let the criminals get away with stealing from us. Now a days, every one has a camera-maybe some of the businesses should put up cameras to catch these thieves-sad that it has to be done, but it does. And parents, quit thinking that your child wouldn’t do that-all children have the potential to be led astray, punish them instead of the police or teachers when your child does wrong. This too will help cut down on crime-I always knew that if I got in any trouble with the law, I would get even worse when I got home!!

  3. It’s sad to say, but soon the citizens will be taking matters into their own hands to defend their property. As for the officers giving tickets, I can see why. I was told this weekend that the officer that sits on the frontage road along 290 brings in close to $20,000 in two to three month’s time!!! Money talks and if all the officers bring in that, solving crimes will surely be on the bottom of the list. Don’t get me wrong, I think the officers are doing a great job, and I would not be out there doing this dangerous job myself, but something does need to be done-but we can not just blame the officers, how many of you turn a blind eye when something happens because you don’t want to get involved? We see it all the time and as long as we as residents of this town refuse to turn people in, the crimes will keep on happening.

    2. Amen! What happen to knowing your neighbors and looking out for each other. Some of our home town folks need to remember this. That’s what made Brenham in the old days! This is what made me feel a home some 30 + years ago. Brenham can be this way again with the people’s help and looking out for each other again. That’s how it looks to this small home town girl.

  4. It is amazing the increase in crime in Brenham in the last 6 to 12 months. You have an officer that sits every morning by the high school giving out tickets left and right for no telling what. I really don’t think that any of these parents dropping off their kids are hardened criminals that are breaking into any local business, stealing from homes or car dealerships….I’m thinking it’s more of an Inspection sticker or tag issue. Seems to me like his “Patrolling” could be put to better use. The rim/tire theft has been going on for several years. I think the timing and people in the community are finally getting tired of being stolen from. Brenham is no longer a “small town” community….we now have to lock our doors and not always trust our neighbor. With the holidays coming, it’s only gonna get worse!

    1. While I do agree with “mom’s” statement that hardened criminals aren’t generally the ones getting tickets near/in the school zones, I do think that their presence there is essential. Having officers in or near our schools can be considered a deterrent for things that would endanger our children, such as dangerous driving. School zones have extra laws that apply only to them for a reason, to try and protect our children. In order to enforce those extra laws we have to have police present to do so.

The job of the police is not to prevent crime, it is to enforce the law. They can’t be everywhere all the time. It is up to individuals and business owners to try and prevent theft of their property. It is the police’s job to do their best to find and arrest the criminals after the crime has been committed.

    2. Do you think those tires were stolen between 7:00am and 8:00am when that Officer was working school traffic protecting YOUR children.. mom ???

  5. JD I have been asking the same questions for months now since I
Was a victim also I have questioned the fact that officers are running up and down the highway or sitting on the side of 290 looking for speeders instead of these thieves I guess city council don’t care about the thieves as long as revenue from citations keep coming in. If u question anyone at PD about it all they will say is Part I crimes are down! Somehow I don’t think that’s the case anymore!!

  6. Murder, armed robbery ,burglaries, auto theft, and now rims and tire theft. When will the city council say enough is enough and question our chief of police and ask him just what is his plan to take control of this. Several of the thefts are very close to our new state of the art police station.

  7. First LaRoche and now Appel Ford. I guess Appel Dodge is next, since these thieves will have very little interest in wheels off of Toyotas or Hyundais. I think if it were my dealership I’d try to fit hiring a nighttime security guard to help prevent/deter these kinds of thefts. I would much rather spend my company’s money creating a job that would emply a hard working individual than having to spend it replacing something that worthless lazy thieves stole. Wake up Brenham, crime is on the rise here and it isn’t going to get any better.
