STATE SENATE AGAIN VOTES TO BAN RED-LIGHT CAMERAS

The Texas Senate has given approval to a bill banning the use of red light cameras in traffic enforcement.

Supporters of red light cameras, including police and trauma experts, say they help uphold the law and reduce crashes.

Critics say they invade privacy, put the burden on drivers to prove their innocence and are used to raise cash for local governments.

The Senate has twice voted in recent years to ban red light cameras but the measures have failed to pass the Texas House.

Another bill approved by the Senate on Wednesday would bar state and local governments from blocking vehicle registrations based on outstanding tickets issued by red light cameras.

  1. Having been ticketed with a red light camera I came to realize what they really are. A private company offers to install cameras at no cost to the municipality. It shares the revenue with the city. There never would be enough revenue generated by vehicles running straight thru a red light, so to increase income they ticket any vehicles not coming to a complete stop when turning right at the light. I had to watch the video twice before I noticed my infraction. If a police officer was at that same corner at that same time I’m sure that nanosecond I did not stop would be overlooked! Gotta think private detention centers are sharing some of this same thought process!

    1. I agree. But I don’t need no camera to keep up with my man. He knows he’s got it good with my home cooking. There’s more to like than corn on cob.

  2. Several things come to mind with the cameras and why they should not be used. I agree with their decision.
    1. The cameras have to be maintained, if they are not calibrated correctly they could record incorrect information. (ie capture the car behind the one that ran the light) plus the cost to do this.
    2. The camera pictures have to be interpreted. I have had a toll company send me a bill for using a toll when I was no where near the place they said. The person writing down the lic plate wrote down the wrong number.
    3. Increase in rear end collisions because they see the camera a hit the brakes, the person behind them slams into the back of them, then whose fault is it there.

  3. How can the senate be concerned with privacy when the gop fully supports the feds in selling our internet privacy? What does privacy have to do with running stop lights? Why do the senators NOT heed the experienced law enforcement officials desire for these cameras? Cameras also help insurance companies in assigning liability in accidents. Who does it help not having the cameras?? The law breakers? Why do they not want to catch these law breakers that can potentially kill an entire family with bad driving habits? Texans it is time to flush out our state house and start over.

    1. Red light cameras ticket the owner of the vehicle, not the driver. That’s what I disagree with.

    2. Why don’t we set up cameras all around your house with a 24 hour live feed, just to make sure you don’t break any laws. Not that you would, but we need to be sure you’re caught and fined in case you do. We need more money for things like sculptures in our parks.
