Kolkhorst was elected to the Texas Senate on December 6, 2014, filling the unexpired term of then newly-elected Comptroller Glenn Hegar.  Previously, she had served 14 years in the Texas House of Representatives.

In her first session as Senator, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick appointed Kolkhorst to five key committees for Senate District 18 including Finance, Education, Health & Human Services, Transportation and Agriculture Water & Rural Affairs. Senator Kolkhorst also proved her conservative credentials when she was asked to serve for the third time on the state's powerful budget conference committee which secured $4.8 billion of historic tax relief for Texas families and businesses and appropriated over $800 million for border security operations to fight human smuggling and drug trafficking.

“I am grateful for the continued support of the people in Senate District 18 spanning 21 counties who expect state government to meet our responsibilities in a fiscally responsible manner," said Senator Kolkhorst. "We must continue our fight to improve education, secure our borders, protect our most vulnerable citizens, and maintain the economic successes."

Kolkhorst has also been recently named to the Joint Interim Committee to Study a Coastal Barrier System by Lt. Governor Patrick. During the 84th legislative session, Senator Kolkhorst passed 72 bills, the third most of any senator. Among the 72 were many local bills necessary for growth and infrastructure. Kolkhorst also authored several successful initiatives that helped support public education, protected personal data, assisted farmers and ranchers and repealed outdated taxes.

"I enjoy working with local leaders to address issues like water, transportation, private property rights and border security among many others," said Kolkhorst. "The very best ideas come from the people and my goal is to return the power back to the people.”

A fifth-generation Texan, with ancestral roots to the Texas War of Independence, Kolkhorst is married to her high-school sweetheart, Jim. They are small business owners and together have two children, Lois Kate and Jake.

Senate District 18 includes all or parts of 21 counties including Aransas, Austin, Burleson, Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Fayette, Fort Bend, Goliad, Gonzales, Harris, Jackson, Lavaca, Lee, Matagorda, Nueces, Refugio, Victoria, Waller, Washington and Wharton.
