WINTER STORM IN AREA

  

 

Ten counties in the Brazos Valley, including Washington County, are now under winter storm warning, as a wet cold front blew in overnight, with freezing rain and even some snow.

The Texas Department of Transportation is reporting ice on some bridges, overpasses and roads.  Washington County emergency dispatch reports that highway 290  from FM 389 to FM 577 was shut down as of five this (Tuesday) morning.  That stretch of highway did not reopen until just after one in thge afternoon.

Bob Colwell of the Bryan district TxDot office is asking that people not travel unless absolutely necessary.  Brazos, Leon, Milam, Freestone, Robertson, Walker, Madison and Grimes County are under similar warning.   Sleet and freezing rain can create extremely dangerous driving conditions.

This means numerous delays in the area.

The Brenham School District, will open two hours late.  Burton, Somerville, Christ Lutheran Day School, St. Paul’s Christian Day School, the First Baptist Church School,  and Snook will all open at ten am.  The Brenham Christian Academy will open at 9:30am.  Parents may drop off their children at St. Paul’s beginning at 9am.   Fayette ISD will open three hours later. Blinn College will open at noon.

The Blue Bell Aquatic Center, the Nancy Carol Roberts Library and the Brenham City Hall will also open at 10am.

The Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative will open their offices in Bastrop at 10am.  Crews are on the alert to respond to any power outages.
