WENDY DAVIS DRAWING CLOSE ON GOVERNOR’S RACE

Republicans in Texas could find themselves taking the Democratic candidate for governor seriously for the first time in two decades.

The University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll demonstrated how far Ft. Worth State Senator Wendy Davis has come in a showdown with presumptive Republican nominee Attorney General Gregg Abbott.

Abbott leads Davis 40% to 34%, with 25 % still undecided.  Davis matches up with Abbott in terms of favorability.  Both candidates have an unfavorable rating of 24 %.

The last time Texas elected a Democratic governor was in 1990 when Ann Richards defeated Republican Clayton Williams.  No Democrat has held statewide office since the 1994 election.
