AREA DOCTOR FACES CHALLENGES IN STEM CELL BANKING THERAPY
A doctor with ties to Washington County is using research and therapies that he says, can use your own stem cells to heal you of such afflictions as arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Dr. Stanley Jones began Celltex, a Houston based stem cell banking company, that takes a patient’s stem cells, banks them, allows them to grow naturally and then creating millions of identical copies cryopreserved. The patient can then use these stem cells for the rest of their lives.
Dr. Jones, an orthopedic surgeon, who owns property in Chappell Hill, said he was so badly afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis that he could not continue his work. That’s when he began his research. He says the therapy uses millions of a patient’s own stem cells to heal them. Jones says the therapy has worked on him, some 500 people in Texas and a 100,000 people in Asia.
Dr, Jones says he hopes the research will continue so that eventually stem cells can grow new pancreas’ for diabetics, and perhaps even new hearts. Continuing the research has become a problem.
Dr. Jones says after treating over 200 people the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said this type of therapy, injecting a patient’s own stem cells into their bodies, was in fact, injecting a new and unapproved drug. He says he now has to send his patients Cancun, or Guadalajara, Mexico for their treatment. He has appealed to the FDA for approval but he says they are not interested. Dr. Jones has an ally in Gov. Rick Perry, who is saying since the treatments are only taking place in Texas, the FDA rules do not apply. Jones hopes to be able to perform his therapy freely in Texas. Dr. Jones will present his therapy and case for stem cell banking at the meeting of the Rotary Club of Washington County on November 14th.
