BRENHAM STUDENTS TO GET A DIFFERENT KIND OF VETERAN STORY
For decades each of the campuses in the Brenham School district have remembered Veteran’s Day with a special program, recognizing the service of the men and woman who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the nation’s most critical times.
The Brenham High School commemoration is at 9:30 Monday morning in the auditorium. The speaker will be retired Army Master Sgt. Inge Conley. Her story is a different one from many others.
She was born a German citizen and did not see the United States until she was a young adult. Ms. Conley had a strong desire to see this country and traveled here. She was so impressed she joined the Army in 1975. At first she was in the Women’s Army Corps, again a different experience from male soldiers. She was taught the proper way to put on makeup, and how lady in uniform should behave. That came to an end just a few years later when women were integrated into the regular Army. She, was trained on an M-16 and taught to throw a live grenade.
The retired Master Sergeant, who now lives with her husband in Humble, wants to tell the young people at Brenham High School that is important to remember the veterans and all they have sacrificed. She also wants to tell them that if they were to serve their country in uniform they would find a new family they could hold onto for the rest of their lives.
Master Sgt. Conley is also the keynote speaker for the traditional Veteran’s Day ceremony at the American Legion Hall in Fireman’s Park at 11am Monday.
